Riverwalk Project Description

The Haverhill Riverwalk Project will be divided into two tasks as described below.

Task A: Final Design of Gateway Portion of Riverwalk:

The Gateway Segment of the project is located behind the TAP complex near the MBTA Station. The Riverwalk will follow behind the river wall for approximately 300 feet eastward and connect to the existing Riverfront Park. Included in Task A is the repaving of the existing parking lot. Reconfiguration of the parking space layout will seek to achieve minimum reduction in parking spaces. Modifications to the existing parking lot storm drainage systems will be investigated.

Redecking of the existing walkway segment behind the Haverhill Bank with similar type decking and railings is included.

This portion of the Riverwalk Project will be advanced to final design for construction bidding by MassHighway prior to September 30, 2007. Construction will occur in 2008.

Task B: Preliminary Design of the Haverhill Riverwalk:

Work includes a preliminary design for the remainder of the Haverhill Riverwalk Project as shown on the attached plan. This segment of the walkway begins at Riverfront Park at the terminus of the Gateway portion of the Riverwalk (Task A). The Riverwalk alignment then follows the river wall to the Main Street Bridge (Route 125) at the east end. The walkway will then cross the Main Street Bridge (Route 125) to the Bradford side of the Merrimack River and extend along the shore to the Upper County Bridge. It is anticipated that the existing sidewalks on both bridges over the river will remain as part of the Riverwalk. The Riverwalk will be cantilevered from the existing wall out over the Merrimack River. On the southerly side the Riverwalk will generally follow the abandoned rail line and not require walls along the river. The total length is approximately 3000 ft on each side of the Merrimack River.
