LEACHING AREA REQUIREMENTS REGULATION

The Board of Health, City of Haverhill, in accordance with and under the authority granted by Section 31 of Chapter 111 of the Mass. General Laws, promulgated and adopted the following regulation at a public hearing on May 9, 1972.

*The percolation test must be performed in accordance with the procedure outlined in Regulation 14.2 of this article.

1. Minimum area for leaching trench or seepage pit is 0.5 square foot per gallon. (Bottom of trench only.)

2. Minimum area for leaching bed is one square foot per gallon.

3. Whenever the percolation rate is over 10 minutes per inch, the use of leaching trenches is desirable because of poor soil conditions.

4. The above leaching area requirements are for settled sanitary sewage of normal strength. The area required for subsurface disposal of other wastes is to be determined on the merits of each individual case.

5. Systems handling greater than 2000 gallons per day shall not be installed where the percolation rate is greater than one inch in 20 minutes.

6. Soil with a percolation rate of over 20 minutes per inch is considered impervious and therefore unsuitable for the subsurface disposal sewage.

7. Area requirements will be increased 25% when garbage grinders are used.
