WATER AND WASTEWATER DIVISIONS
Wastewater Division
Helpful Information:
The Wastewater Division consists of two groups: wastewater
collection and wastewater treatment.
Wastewater Treatment is responsible for operating and
maintaining the City's wastewater treatment plant. The treatment plant
provides primary and secondary treatment for the City's wastewater. The
plant discharges the treated effluent to the Merrimack River.
Wastewater Collection is responsible for maintaining,
repairing and operating the City's wastewater collection system. The collection
system is the network of pipes, manholes, pumping stations and flow control
structures throughout the City that collects and conveys the City's wastewater
to the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Septage Receiving:
The Wastewater Treatment Plant receives septage from commercial septage
haulers, motor homes, and RV's. For rates, hours of operation and requirements
for acceptance call the Wastewater Treatment Plant at (978) 374-2382.
Wastewater Pretreatment Program:
The Wastewater Division operates a wastewater pretreatment program in
accordance with City Ordinance Section 208 Article V. The pretreatment
program applies to commercial and industrial establishments connected
to the City's sewer system. The purpose of the program is to eliminate
the discharge of pollutants or wastewater to the City's sewer system that
will pass through or interfere with the treatment processes at the Wastewater
Treatment Plant. Call the Wastewater Treatment Plant at (978) 374-2382
for further information.
Your Sewer Service:
Each property is required to have a separate sewer service. Your service
extends from its connection to the sewer main in the street to the plumbing
in your house. As the property owner you are responsible for maintaining
your service in good working order at your expense. Connections of roof
downspouts, exterior foundation drains, areaway drains or other sources
of surface water runoff or groundwater to your sewer service are prohibited.
Catch Basin Cleaning:
The Wastewater Collection system is responsible for cleaning stormwater
catch basins throughout the City. If you have a catch basin that is clogged
and creating a flooding problem call us at (978)374-2382.
Domestic Trailer Waste:
Domestic Trailer Waste, defined as wastes discharged from camping trailer,
will be allowed to discharge at the plant. Each camping trailer shall
purchase an annual permit (January 1 to December 31) at the rate of $6.25.
