The Mayor’s Weekly Column

Mayor James J. Fiorentini and Senator Ted Kennedy

This past week, I had the great pleasure of representing our city at Senator Ted Kennedy’s annual clambake at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis port. It was an honor to be there along with Mayors and business people from throughout the State.

I met Senator Kennedy in April when I went to Washington to lobby for money for Haverhill. The Senator has a great memory for names, faces and details, and I was thrilled Saturday that he recalled our April meeting.

Senator Kennedy is assisting us in getting money to dredge the Merrimack River and open the river to more boat traffic. He was instrumental in putting $200,000 into the Federal budget to start the process. With our financial problems, we have to lobby for as many Federal and State dollars as we can. This year we obtained our first brownfields grant of $400,000 to clean up old factory buildings, $200,000 to study dredging the Merrimack River, and $7.6 million to build a parking deck downtown. Senator Kennedy, and Congressman Martin Meehan both did a terrific job for us, and I was happy to be there to thank the Senator in person.

Italian Festival 2005

Sunday, I joined with thousands of others at Haverhill’s second annual Italian festival, called, "North of the North End.” The Haverhill Downtown Associates did a wonderful job at the festival along with the Sons of Italy, and the Italian festival committee led by Janet Donovan, Maggie Rosinski, Jean Cuscia and Kim Kopet. The weather was perfect and thousands of people turned out for the concert by Tony Pace.

Here’s a photo of the Sons of Italy band starting the festival. It was a perfect day and great time by all.

Festivals are great way to promote our city, and we hope to do more of them in the future.

Jim Fiorentini
